A group led by Democratic party’s Gyeongnam chair, Kim Jeong Ho and Gyeongnam assembly’s economic environment committee chair, Park Jun Ho visited STX Engine, a diesel engine supplier for defense and ships on the 18th and discussed ways to promote the regional economy of shipbuilding materials and defense industry.
In his greeting, assembly member, Kim Jeong Ho said, “Dwindling shipbuilding industry and long lasting COVID-19 is causing a huge threat to shipbuilding and material companies in Gyeongnam. In line with the currently shipbuilding industry promotion plans and revitalization plans pursued by the government and the self-governing local organization, we will hear out complaints and suggestions from the field of shipbuilding industry and do the best to ensure actual revitalization plan can be established.”.
Gyeongnam assembly’s economic environment committee chair, Park Jun Ho said they will make the best efforts for improving the regional economy and lives of locals by taking the first move to approach the problems and thinking hard to come up with outcomes instead of maintaining a passive attitude to give help when wanted because this is the attitude that industry wants to see.
STX Engine’s CEO Park Gi Mun and the CEO of partner company showed deep gratitude for their visits to seek out ways to revitalize the shipbuilding material and defense industry amidst the difficult times despite some recover of the shipbuilding economy even if it accounts for a huge portion of regional economy.
In addition, they demanded governmental supports for speedy commercialization of 1360 hp engine independently developed by STX Engine, and especially, as COVID-19 persists, there are difficulties in hiring immigrant workers, so they proposed a more flexible operation of weekly 53 hours of work temporarily during the COVID-19 and allow them to re-enter Korea after getting the vaccine at local Korean embassy.
In response, assembly member, Kim Jeong Ho said it is not desirable to change the basic labor and quarantine plans of Korea but as COVID-19 persists, he understands the hardships of the industry and will discuss with the government on how to flexibly respond to issues. And he demanded they would aggressively respond to the future shipbuilding industry through eco-friendly engine development and so on.
Assembly member Kim Jeong Ho and STX Engine promised with each other to keep working hard until the actual system is in place for business expansions and ensuring another leaps by the domestic shipbuilding industry, thus concluding the meeting.
